Email of the Day: With Lots of Work, I Got the Fairy-Tale Ending

I started listening to you nine years ago and realized I had been doing everything wrong in my life. I married and divorced twice, seeking happiness I could never find. I learned from extensive psychotherapy that I was my own worst enemy. Al-Anon became my source of serenity as I healed from the alcoholic-fueled, abusive marriages I’d been in.

After several years of being on my own and becoming independent, I wondered what it would be like to truly be loved by a man. That’s when, after 36 years, I ran into my high school sweetheart. Both of us were divorced with adult children. We began dating, and slowly realized we were meant to be with each other. After two years, he proposed to me in such a way that I’d only heard of in fairy tales. He has shown me that true love can exist, and he cares about my well-being more than he cares about himself. He leaves me little notes during the day, and I remind myself to do something that will make his day better every day. I am always his girlfriend and will continue to be as long as we’re on this earth together. He’s worth every breath, every sunrise, every sunset, and every second that ticks on the clock.

Dr. Laura, I’m grateful for your books and your sometimes hard-to-hear advice. Most of all, I’m grateful for your genuinely caring about your listeners. My life changed with extensive hard work, and now I get to reap the reward. I’ll keep smiling!
