Before the pandemic, I sat next to a woman in the park while I was watching my kids play. She said she’d be glad when they went back to school, because her nanny was sick and her house was noisy and messy and she couldn’t wait to get her life back! She couldn’t understand why I wasn’t exhausted trying to entertain them.
So instead of getting up, I said to her “Sometimes I get exhausted spending all day with them, but if I didn’t, I would be doing something wrong. Instead of letting TV and videos ‘babysit’ them all day, I have fun coming up with different adventures for us. Sometimes we try a new park or a new place for lunch. Other times, splashing in puddles hits the right spot. Making art projects or lemonade stands is fun.” “Oh,” she replied, you are one of those types of moms.” Before I walked away, I proudly responded, “Yes I am, and I’m sorry you don’t see any fun in that.”
