Email of the Day: You CAN Overcome Loneliness!

Over the years of listening, I’ve heard calls from people who are lonely. They’ve retired, lost a spouse, or the kids have grown up and moved out. Your advice to them is to find an activity or do something they enjoy. You are so “on the money.”

 

While I am married and in no way “lonely,” I AM an introvert and mainly keep to myself. A few years ago, I started going to the local gym, which has a pool, and I began walking laps, but that’s a solitary activity. Last year, I finally decided to get over my shyness and signed up for an aqua fitness class instead.

 

This was the best thing I’ve ever done, because of the multiple benefits it brings me. Not only do I get exercise, but I also get to listen to wonderful music during the class, and (this is the part that will help anyone who is lonely), I’ve made new friends. We even do things outside of class (like going to dinner or just getting together). Being accepted as part of this group is a wonderful feeling, and I’m so glad I took that first step to allow it to happen.
