Almost 40 years ago, I took my four small daughters with me to my husband’s local drinking hole. He drank there very regularly with business associates. When approaching the group, my husband was stunned and said “What’s wrong?” I replied, “The girls miss you, so we’ve come to visit!” He immediately got up and we all went home. He never said anything about this. He did stop going to the bar to drink, but he drank in the garage.
Fifteen years later, I ran into a woman who had been in the group that was drinking with my husband that night. At that time, she was married and had a little girl. One day, her husband left – nowhere to be found, and never to be heard from again. She and her daughter moved in with her mother. She worked, and went out most evenings to be with her boyfriend and other adults, which is when she encountered me.
After my little stunt in the bar, she said she suddenly realized that her daughter not only didn’t have a father, but practically had no mother. She only had her grandma. So, she made a big change and started staying home to take care of her daughter.
What she said gave me goosebumps. I guess you never know how one small action can influence someone else so dramatically.
