Almost 25 years ago, I called you asking whether or not my husband should take a graveyard shift at his job. My only concern at the time was how it would affect our relationship. Your response, however, was whether or not I wanted my children and our family unit to be intact and whole! I was surprised, because children hadn’t even entered into a discussion between the two of us at that point.
Once I hung up with you, I had a different perspective. My focus then became how we would design our lives to work around the children we didn’t have yet. I became a stay-at-home mom four years after that call, we moved to a state where my husband had a more traditional job schedule, and I’ve devoted myself to raising our two daughters to be healthy, strong and self-sufficient women. My oldest just turned 21 and my youngest will be off to college in the fall.
Thank you for asking a question that seemed completely random and unrelated to me at the time. You saw the bigger picture of my life that I hadn’t even considered. It changed the path of my thinking, and because of that, my daughters will be going into the world ready to conquer whatever comes their way.
