How Do I Handle My Passive-Aggressive Mother?

Nicole has always had a difficult relationship with her mother. When she and her sister weren't able to coordinate a time for both of their families to travel to their parents' house for their mother's birthday and to receive their Christmas money, their mother told them to forget it and she would just mail them a check. Nicole has tried to be accommodating, but this behavior is typical for her mother and she isn't sure how she should handle it.
