Email of the Day: Keep the Peace and Be Polite

By Dr. Laura on May 30, 2024
Two shadows of hands approach in a handshake against a wall

Years ago, a woman on your program said that she and a certain family member just couldn’t get along. Unfortunately for the woman, the two frequently saw each other at family gatherings. You told her she didn't have to like that family member, but that she should make an effort to have a β€˜polite’ relationship with her. That meant if they were together at family events, they could at least be polite.

This advice has helped me so much with my mother. Without going into all the messy details, I asked her if she'd like to have a "polite" relationship with me. She immediately took me up on my offer.  It took me a while to accept that my mother didn't want to be closer to me, but after listening to you over the last 18 months, I’m at peace with our "polite" relationship.  Thank you for your words of wisdom. I found freedom in them!
