When I was growing up, my father and grandfather both told me βYou have just one reason to do the right thing and that is that it is the right thing!β That has served me well through my life and was something I passed on to my sons.
My youngest son was in his early twenties, serving in the Air Force, when he called me and told me he was facing a moral dilemma. I didnβt ask him what it was, but I told him βSon, all of your life your mother and I have taught you the difference between right and wrong. As such, you have no moral dilemma.β His response was βI knew you were going to say that!β I said that was his conscience speaking to him, and he replied βNo, Dad, that voice sounded a lot like yours.β We had a good laugh over that.
I learned another life lesson when I was in the Army in the early 1970s. When you are so physically and mentally exhausted that you donβt think you can continue to put one foot in front of the otherβ¦you can. That, too, has served me well and has been passed on to my sons.
