I had a TERRIBLE mother. And my mom and her mother did not have a good relationship. Neither did my grandmother and her mother.
My son was 4 when I found out I was pregnant with a baby girl. It scared me to death! My dad babysat my son during one of the first prenatal appointments, and I told him how worried I was to have a girl because of our family history. He said, “Amy, I think you’ll be the one to break that cycle." As we hit the road to return home that day, I turned on the radio and caught Dr. Laura in mid-conversation telling the caller:
"As a woman, you have two chances at the mother-daughter relationship. The first one is the one you are born into, and you have no control over that. The second one is the one you give birth to,” then your voice went low and quiet as you continued, "And you have all the control over that.”
A light bulb went off in my head! You were so right! Today my daughter is 28, and a lovely young lady. I really don't think I would have the relationship I do with my daughter if I hadn't heard that call years ago.
