There once was a boy from Forest Hills, NY who went on many fun adventures. He started his own business which he ran for 56 years, and he and his wife had a daughter – their one and only, and their treasure.
How this man adored his daughter! He attended every event, made many “teachable” moments and was there for her. At the time, his “one and only” didn’t realize how important these lessons were, but he said “Just you wait; it will all make sense one day.” His one and only grew up, married a wonderful man, and had a handsome baby boy. And he became the proudest grandfather imaginable.
A year later, he had heart surgery and asked the surgeon to give him “some more time” so that his grandson would remember him. He got ten more years, and they were filled with great lessons, teachable moments, hugs and kisses. That man was my father. He passed away peacefully, and the day after his death, I was listening to music he loved. While tears were streaming down my face, I realized I was also smiling at the same time. Everything he ever taught me, showed me, and told me about culminated in that powerful moment, that smile – his gift to me. Because of him, I’m a happy, responsible and confident wife and mother – just what he had always wanted for me!
