Even though we’re still in a pandemic, this has been the time of year when many kids go away to college, leaving their parents with an empty nest. That was my situation twelve years ago when we dropped off our youngest daughter at school clear across the country. I had been a stay-at-home mom to our four daughters, and I knew my life was going to change from that moment. My husband was looking forward to the new chapter in our lives, but I felt sad and a little lost. The day-to-day mothering that I had loved would never be the same.
The next morning, my favorite music was playing as my husband led me to our back deck, where he had set a beautiful breakfast table, complete with flowers he had arranged! We shared a delicious meal, complete with mimosas, to celebrate this new phase of our lives together. What really touched my heart was that he had anticipated how I was probably going to feel when we returned home, and he had planned everything ahead of time to make this gesture of love. It really lifted my spirits. I decided then and there that I would change my attitude and embrace this new and exciting time in our lives. He made me feel so special and so loved that he deserved to feel like he was Number One in my life as well. We just celebrated 40 years of marriage and we could not be happier. I strive every day to show him how much he means to me and how much I love him.
