Email of the Day: My Kids Didn’t Need Preschool

Email of the Day: My Kids Didn’t Need Preschool

I grew up with divorced parents and a deadbeat dad, and I was a daycare kid. I hated it. I quit my job 13 years ago when my first son was born. I was in my late 20s, and dedicated myself to raising my kids, even though I was still rather young at the time. I also kept my kids from preschool and they didn’t start their “formal” education until age 6 when they entered kindergarten.

What surprised me is that I never got much flak from being a stay-at-home mom, but I did get resistance and horrible comments from family and teachers for not sending my kids to preschool! It didn’t faze me, as I kept listening to you and what you have said.

My kids are now in a parochial school and I have yet to meet a family that hasn’t sent their kid to preschool. I watched this morning while parents driving Teslas and Mercedes dropped off their tiny kids at preschool. Because of the pandemic, the parents aren’t even allowed to get out of the car to walk them into the facility. I thought about all the wonderful times my kids and I had until the day they were in kindergarten, and these parents have no idea what they’re missing. Forget the theory of social and academic excellence kids get from attending preschool. I know that being a full-time MOM works!
