Email of the Day: Embracing My Struggle

By Dr. Laura on January 31, 2024

I just listened to your Deep Dive podcast on Building Better Habits. Iโ€™ve been struggling quite a bit with anxiety, particularly panic attacks on subways, bridges and highways. This anxiety has turned my life upside down. To manage it, I decided to start building new habits, such as doing breathing exercises throughout the day (5 times a day for 5 minutes each), lowering my shoulders, decreasing my sugar intake and slowly exposing myself to challenging situations so I give myself โ€œlittle winsโ€ while not biting off more than I can chew.

These actions are slowly helping. But, thereโ€™s something you said in your Deep Dive that really struck me, and it's now helping me reframe the way I look at my anxiety. You said: โ€œDonโ€™t hate the struggle. Itโ€™s your key to a lot of joyโ€ฆ LOVE the struggle. It will eventually bring you a great gift.โ€ Iโ€™m going to do that. Letโ€™s see what this beast of a struggle gifts me.
