Email of the Day: The Most Valuable Job of All

Little boy kisses woman on the cheek as they draw on the ground

I recently found a letter that my son, Denny, wrote to you when he was 22 years old. He wrote it for my 50th birthday to thank me for being his stay-at-home-mom.

β€œAs I mature into young adulthood, I reflect on my childhood years. I always had the comfort of knowing that my mother was waiting for my brother and I to come home from school. She would fix us a snack when we would get home, but then it was time to do homework until dinner. She volunteered at my high school and always maintained interest in my life. During these tumultuous years, she guided me on the right track.

Now that I am older, I wonder how she was able to raise two boys the way she did. I was never hit as a child, nor ever grounded; it was the threat of her disappointment in me that humbled my temptations to do wrong.

Parents who choose daycare do not fully realize that kids want their moms. My mother could have taken any number of jobs to validate herself.  Instead, she fulfilled the most important role of all: being my mom, which is what has made me the man I am today.”

Denny is now a lawyer and married with an 11-year-old daughter!

Very thankfully yours,

Marty
