Email of the Day: Older Kids Need Their Mom Too

Email of the Day: Older Kids Need Their Mom Too

My husband and I have two children who are eight years apart. Through my pregnancies, I used the Internet to connect with other supportive stay-at-home moms. Most women were going through the same thing, so I was surprised when after our children were born and many of the other moms eased back into jobs, I got comments about my β€œonly” being at home with my baby and school-aged child.

I did what worked for my children – and I did meet other moms who were like me, sacrificing extra income to raise and enjoy our children. But it took me a while to pick up on the attitude that somehow, I was dumb or lazy because I didn’t jump into an office job as soon as my baby was six weeks old.

I also remember you saying that being home with your children is just as important when they are tweens and teens as when they’re infants or toddlers. As my daughter navigated through eighth grade, and I saw some of the hijinks going on with the other kids, I was at home every day for her when she needed to talk through something. My children will eventually be old enough to take care of themselves, but time is precious, and I’m glad I’ve been there for them through all stages of their life so far.
